Coral Reef Restoration

To strengthen Coral Reef Habitat resilience, we are taking steps to enhance the long-term health of reef ecosystems, including experimenting with artificial reefs as one pathway to support recovery and adaptation. Thanks to funding from Taronga Zoo, in 2025 we constructed and deployed close to 500 artificial reef units. A key element of the artificial reef pilot was the establishment of fish banks, which are community-agreed areas where extraction is restricted to allow fish populations to recover and breeding stocks to rebuild. By protecting critical habitats and giving fish time and space to grow to reproductive size, fish banks can help restore local abundance and diversity, with benefits that extend beyond their boundaries. Within just six months of installing the artificial reefs, both villages experienced a clear increase in fish presence, showing that the reefs are working effectively. In Antafiamiovny, the total fish weight increased dramatically, about 34 times more than before, while in Ambavarano it roughly doubled. At the same time, the number of fish in the same area nearly tripled in both villages, meaning fish are quickly gathering around the reefs. Overall, this shows that artificial reefs can rapidly attract fish and help rebuild marine life, even in a short period of time.
