Building Self-Esteem through Theatre

Performing arts provide a platform for self-discovery, allowing young people to explore their emotions, identities and talents. By engaging in these activities, youth can develop a stronger sense of self, better understand their strengths and become more confident in their abilities. This confidence often extends beyond the literal stage, positively impacting other areas of their lives, including academics, social interactions and future career pursuits. On the 23rd of August, a group of 12 Girls Club members participated in the annual Barefeet Festival held in Zambia’s capital city of Lusaka, an event that brings together schools and different theatre groups to showcase talent and raise awareness about pressing social and environmental challenges. The girls performed before an audience of approximately 3,000 spectators. For the girls, this was more than just a performance; it was a carefully designed opportunity to build their performance confidence in an unfamiliar, urban and incredibly exciting setting.
