Cyclone Response

Our Medical Support Programme faced significant challenges due to cyclone Gamane in the course of 2024, which impacted both the health infrastructure and the health needs of residents in Ampisikinana. In response, we mobilised our medical team to attend to urgent cases, financing additional medical supplies administered through our nurses as the washed away roads obstructed the region’s doctor from his monthly visits. Our immediate response to the health needs following the cyclone was humanitarian in nature, and we also worked with residents to identify long-term plans to protect themselves against future storms of this magnitude. Specifically, we initiated community health education programmes focusing on disaster preparedness and responses, including training on emergency response strategies for health workers and establishing a supply chain for essential medicines that is not dependent on an intact road network. We partnered with Medair, a non-profit organization that trains volunteers to offer support during catastrophes as well as the Madagascan government office in charge of disaster management. Collectively, we devoted 45 hours to training over 300 participants from our communities on disaster preparedness between August and November.
